EXPERIENCE
Jana Echevarría, Ph.D., is Professor Emerita at California State University, Long Beach where she received her university's Outstanding Professor award for excellence in scholarship, teaching and service. A founding researcher of the SIOP Model, Dr. Echevarría has published widely on effective instruction for English learners, including those with learning disabilities. She has presented her research throughout the U.S. and internationally, including at Oxford University (England), Wits University (South Africa), Harvard University (U.S.), Stanford University (U.S.), University of Barcelona (Spain), and South East Europe University (Macedonia) where she was a Fulbright Specialist. She also was a resident instructor at Feng Chia University (Taiwan).
Dr. Echevarría was a finalist for the Senior Research Award given by the American Education Research Association and was inducted into the California Reading Hall of Fame. She serves as an expert on English learners for the U.S. Department of Justice.
EXPERIENCE
MaryEllen Vogt, Ed.D., is Professor Emerita, California State University, Long Beach, and currently, she is the Director/ reading specialist for Literacy Intervention & Enrichment for a local nonprofit. She is the author/co-author of numerous articles, chapters, and books, including literacy texts and those in the SIOP series. Dr. Vogt has provided professional development throughout the U. S. and in several countries, and she served as a Visiting Scholar at the University of Cologne, Germany.
She is a member of California’s Reading Hall of Fame, is a recipient of CSULB’s Distinguished Faculty Teaching Award, and was President of the California Reading Association and the International Literacy Association. In 2017, Dr. Vogt was inducted into the International Reading Hall of Fame, an organization of literacy researchers and scholars.
EXPERIENCE
Deborah J. Short, Ph.D., directs Academic Language Research & Training, LLC and provides professional development on academic literacy, content-based ESL, and sheltered instruction worldwide. Formerly she was a division director at the Center for Applied Linguistics where she co-developed the research-validated SIOP Model. She has directed English learner research and program evaluations for the Carnegie Corporation of New York, Rockefeller Foundation, U.S. Department of Education, U.S. Department of Justice, and Southern Poverty Law Center, among others. Publications include the SIOP Model books, ESL textbooks for National Geographic Learning/Cengage, and numerous professional journal articles. She has presented at conferences around the U.S. and in Canada, Europe, South America, the Middle East, and New Zealand.
She has taught ESL and EFL, in New York, California, Virginia, and the DR Congo. She was President of TESOL International Association for 2020-2021 and is now Past President.
EXPERIENCE
Katie Toppel, Ed.D. is the newest member of the SIOP author team and co-author of Making Content Comprehensible for Multilingual Learners: The SIOP® Model, 6th edition. She is currently an elementary Multilingual Learner Specialist in Oregon serving students through co-planning, co-teaching, and small group instruction. Dr. Toppel’s instructional background includes experience as a classroom teacher in kindergarten and first grade and a K-12 Support Services Teacher at the Franconian International School in Germany. She has taught courses in the ESOL endorsement series at Portland State University and continues to support teachers in their professional learning journeys.
Dr. Toppel also co-authored DIY PD: A Guide to Self-Directed Learning for Educators of Multilingual Learners, and co-founded #MLLChat_BkClub on Twitter(X), which provides educators with opportunities to engage in virtual book studies focused on improving practices for multilingual learners. She has additionally authored several articles and book chapters about teaching multilingual learners.
